In 1935, the PenFed Federal Credit Union was established. The Pentagon Federal Credit Union has its headquarters in McLean, Virginia, and is appropriately known as the Pentagon Federal Credit Union. Those having links to the military or the federal government were first barred from joining. Anyone can join this credit union now that it has an open charter. PenFed Credit Union today has over 2.5 million members and $31 billion in assets.

Overview of PenFed Credit Union

The Pentagon Federal Credit Union was created in 1935 and is based in McLean, Virginia, where it has its headquarters. Membership in PenFed is no longer restricted to persons with military or federal government links; anybody can join. PenFed has around 50 locations in 13 states, including military installations in Guam, Japan, & Puerto Rico. Even if there's no branch in your state, you can access your money through a vast network of ATMs. PenFed Financial Services, PenFed Title, & PenFed Realty are all part of the PenFed family.

Basic Account

Savings

Regular Savings & Premium Online Savings are two of PenFed's savings accounts. To join PenFed, you must deposit $5 into one of these savings accounts. 0.05 percent APY is offered in the Regular Savings account, whereas 0.60 percent APY is offered in the Premium Online Savings account. Your dividends are compounded and credited to your account every month with PenFed.

Checking

Free Checking & Access America Checking are two of PenFed's checking accounts. Before you may use the credit union's checking accounts, you must first become a member of PenFed by opening a savings account with a $5 minimum deposit. If you make a $500 monthly direct deposit or maintain a $500 daily balance, you may avoid a $10 monthly service charge with Access America Checking.

CDs (Share Certificates)

Deposit certificates are what banks call Money Market Certificates at PenFed Credit Union (CDs). Credit unions use the term "share certificates" to refer to them. There are penalties for early withdrawal from PenFed's money market certificates, just like with CDs.

Online Premium Savings

PenFed, on the other hand, offers four distinct types of savings accounts. Its top account is the Premium Online Savings account, with an APY of 1.00 percent. Only six withdrawals per month are allowed under federal law, but you can deposit up to $50,000 per day for transfers you initiate. You don't have to pay to move money between your PenFed accounts as long as you follow these rules and regulations. Open an account with as little as $5 in your bank account.

Regular Savings Account

While the PenFed Premium Online Savings account offers higher interest rates, the PenFed Regular Savings account does not. It's still free to open an account, but the 0.5% APY gives you virtually zero interest, and you won't be able to retrieve your money through ATMs. Customers who don't save enough money to earn much interest, but still want easy access to their funds via an ATM, should open a Regular Savings account.

IRAs

PenFed offers a variety of IRAs, each with a unique set of features. To start an IRA Premier account, you'll need a $10,000 minimum balance, but you'll only get a 0.05 percent annual percentage yield. Assets held in IRA Premier accounts can be withdrawn or deposited at any time, as they are liquid. An IRA Savings account, essentially identical to an IRA Premier account, is another choice for you to consider. It's merely $25 to start a reserve, which is the only difference.

Can I Ioin PenFed Credit Union?

Before you can deposit PenFed, you must first apply for membership and be authorized, which is different from other banks, which don't usually demand anything before creating an account. PenFed has dropped the condition that members be affiliated with the military or government. If you apply to join PenFed, there is no assurance that you will be approved. Just put $5 into a Regular Savings account if you've been accepted.

PenFed Credit Union: Where Can I Find It?

About 50 PenFed branches are located in 13 states and three military sites. As a result of their collaboration with Allpoint and CO-OP, PenFed members have access to over 85,000 ATMs around the country. Your account features can also be accessed online and on your mobile phone.

What Online Services Does PenFed Credit Union Offer?

PenFed customers have 24/7 access to all of their accounts' online features using a computer or a mobile device.
